A BITTERSWEET STORY... A few years ago we had a young volunteer (we have many throughout the year) stay for a couple of months at the farm. She became very close to one of the chickens, they did everything together, Josephine we named her after the gal left the farm, followed Josephine, the volunteer, everywhere! When she was dumping compost, weeding the gardens, going for a walk, brushing the Highland cows etc. little Josephine was there right beside big Josephine. She liked to jump up on her lap and sit while J. weeded. The day came for Josephine the volunteer to go home and it was a very sad day for them both...and here is where the story becomes sad.Little Josephine the chicken went into a corner the day her best friend left and never came out again, she was so very sad.We tried many times to take her outside in the garden or the grass or for a walk or to work beside her, but she just looked sad and walked slowly back to the inside of the chicken barn (huge barn and cosy, kept just for the chickens, I know, we're silly) found her little dark corner, laid down, and basically I think tried to leave the world...she wouldn't eat or drink...we put food right in front of her and water, and she wouldn't touch it or come out of the corner...it was so, sad!She lasted a little while and then she slowly left the world...I'll tell you something about this, although we teach love and respect for all animals at this farm, I never saw anything like that before from a chicken and it opened my, eyes as to how much they,... love...Sincerely,Anastasia of LifeSpring Organic farm |
